THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS EMBLEM
The plants are a reminder of the tried and tested synergistic relationship between humans & nature, for health & healing.
Worldwide, snakes are a symbol of rebirth, renewal, fertility and life, due to their ability to shed skin. Snakes are a great analogy to let go of what no longer serves you.
No matter your past, you are capable of growth and renewal.
The two snakes winding up the staff surrounded by wings, originated from the ‘The Caduceus of Hermes’. Caduceus is a Greek word for ‘heralds wand’ aka staff, which was carried by Greek God Hermes. Hermes was a messenger of God and protector of safe passage.
Mythology: Hermes threw his staff between two snakes in an attempt to end a fight between them. In doing so, the two snakes stopped fighting and wrapped themselves around the staff. This since became the symbol for commerce and resolving disputes peacefully.
The Ancient Romans called Hermes Mercury. Mercury is one of the most important alchemical elements and has been found in pharmaceutical preparations. Therefore, the symbol has been linked to healing and remains in use throughout medical institutions today.
Some suggest two snakes to be an incorrect symbol of medicine as ‘The Rod of Asclepius’ presence with one snake and is claimed to be the ‘God of healing’ and ‘the physician hero’. Snakes were often used for purification rituals & medical curative practices through many cultures at that time. It’s speculated, cultural influences are the likely attribute to the Greek’s connection between snake, rod & God of medicine.
The importance of this history is to recognise herbal alchemy as the original modality of healing and how this transpired over time into modern pharmacy. Even with this transition, 40% of the prescribed medications today, still originate from plant sources. Like Hermes, I’m throwing my staff between traditional and modern medicine practices, knowing that in the coming together of these two healing modalities, peace and harmony can be obtained for all.
